Constella(c)tions
Constella(c)tions is an interactive sound work that invites the audience to actively engage in the musical experience through motion sensors. It draws on traditional rope games for children by proposing a performance where musicians’ arms, equipped with smartphone motion sensors, become sound activators. The performance blends physical activity with musical exploration. Designed for both performers (in general) and the audience, these pieces do not require prior musical knowledge. The scores adopt various forms, including drawings, descriptions, sensations, and instructions.
Constella(c)tions operates on the principle of a movable musical form based on recombination. Consequently, while maintaining an overall fixed structure, each performance of this work is distinctive, allowing the audience to modulate the arrangement and intensity of materials, as well as the timing of each section of the piece.
To enhance accessibility, we employed motion sensor technology from mobile phones. The interactive aspect is facilitated through an audio web tool (Como elements), developed by Benjamin Matuszewski, Frédéric Bevilacqua and the ISMM Team at IRCAM.
This piece originated during my artistic residency at IRCAM and received support from the STARTS Residencies program of the European Commission. Dedicated to Ensemble Soundinitiative (Paris), it has been performed extensively across Europe.
